Eloping to the Isle of Skye with Kids: A Complete Guide to Family Elopements in Scotland

There’s something truly magical about the Isle of Skye. The dramatic cliffs, rolling hills, and mirror-like lochs— a place where love and family can be celebrated in the most natural, unfiltered way.

For many couples, eloping to Skye is about intimacy, freedom, and stepping away from tradition. But what if you have children? Can you still have that dreamy, windswept elopement experience… with little feet tagging along?

Coming from someone who has 3 children of her own, and also eloped with two of them in tow…thee answer is a wholehearted yes. In fact, bringing your kids with you can transform your elopement into something even more meaningful. It becomes more than a wedding day; it becomes a family adventure you’ll all remember forever.

This guide will walk you through what it’s really like to elope on the Isle of Skye with kids, with tips, inspiration, and a whole lot of love.

Why Elope with Kids on Skye?

Elopements are already about, going against traditions that don’t suit you. It’s about rewriting the rules, and when children are part of your story, why leave them out?

  • A shared memory – Instead of telling them about it years later, your kids get to be there. They’ll remember running across the hills, holding your hand during vows, or if they are like my daughter, making sure their Pooh Bear is included.
  • Freedom and intimacy – Unlike big weddings, elopements are flexible. You can pause for snack breaks, reschedule around nap times, or swap one location for another if the weather shifts.
  • A true family story – Your elopement becomes more than a couple’s love story — it becomes a family love story, with every giggle, muddy shoe, and spontaneous cuddle woven in.

Skye, with its endless open spaces, secret glens, and child-friendly trails, is the perfect backdrop for a day that’s both adventurous and family-focused.

Challenges (and How to Embrace Them)

Let’s be honest: kids bring joy, but they also bring unpredictability. That’s okay — elopements thrive on spontaneity.

  • Weather: Skye is famously unpredictable. Pack layers, waterproofs, and spare clothes! Embrace the drama of mist and rainbows.
  • Timing: Children tire quickly, so I always suggest breaking the day into small, manageable moments rather than one long stretch.
  • Accessibility: While some iconic spots (like the Old Man of Storr) involve long climbs, there are plenty of breathtaking locations with easy access for families.
  • Energy levels: Some of the best photographs happen when children are simply being themselves — running, laughing, or cuddled in your arms. Don’t stress about “perfect poses.”

Your day doesn’t need to run on a strict timeline. It can (and should) flex around your kids’ needs. That’s part of what makes it yours.

Family-Friendly Elopement Locations on Skye

There are countless places to get married on the Isle of Skye, you can, in theory, get married anywhere on the island. Booking with a local photographer and planner means that you get access to some of the secret spots which I won’t mention here but will happily take you to! Here are a few of my favourite child-friendly spots:

  • Loch Coruisk (by boat): An unforgettable adventure with jaw-dropping mountain views, but gentle once you arrive.
  • The Fairy Glen: Whimsical, accessible, and straight out of a fairytale — my kids love exploring here.
  • Quiraing lower paths: You don’t need to climb to the top for breathtaking views; the lower trails are beautiful and manageable.
  • Secret quiet beaches: Skye has some beautiful hidden beaches, the perks of booking with a local Skye elopement planner!
  • Hidden Woodlands: Mossy, sheltered, and often quiet..because no one know about these places!

Each spot has its own feel — I love helping families choose places that reflect not just the landscape but also their personalities and needs.

A Day in the Life: Family Elopement Itinerary

Every elopement is different, but here’s a glimpse of how a relaxed family elopement on Skye might unfold:

  • Preparations: A slow breakfast together in your cosy accommodation overlooking the mountains. I love the getting ready moments with kids, they never go to plan, often chaotic but so much to capture! Take your time to enjoy the morning together.
  • Ceremony: Once you are ready, we can meet your lovely celebrant and take a short walk to your ceremony spot. Children can be flower bearers, vow witnesses, or simply snuggled beside you as you say your vows. Some couples bring a couple of friends or family members to help out with the kids, others leave it in our capable hands…yes my team are always equipped with bribery (sweets) and extra layers!
  • Celebratory Picnic: A beautiful bell tent picnic! Let the kids explore while I capture candid moments and enjoy some champagne and cake!
  • Adventure at golden hour: A second location for portraits, sometimes I take a few quiet moments with just the couple while the kids play close by.
  • A quiet meal: Perhaps all of you together, or maybe a chef to come and cook whilst your kids are in bed…or I have been known to babysit whilst the couple goes for a meal by themselves…I really mean it when I say your experience is important!

The overall key is flexibility — we follow your family’s rhythm, not the other way around.
