Why Choose the Isle of Skye for Your Wedding or Elopement
The Isle of Skye feels otherworldly — a place where the landscape holds stories, where mist moves through the mountains, and where nature creates the most incredible atmosphere for a wedding or elopement.

Best Isle of Skye Wedding & Elopement Locations (with map + travel times)
I’ve photographed hundreds of weddings and elopements all over the Isle of Skye, and it truly is one of the most magical places in the world to get married. Over the years, I’ve discovered well-known locations as well as hidden, off-the-beaten-track spots that only locals tend to know about.
For now, here are some of the most iconic and popular places to get married or elope on the Isle of Skye.
And if you’re looking for something even more adventurous, you can read about the couple who climbed Skye’s highest mountain peak in their wedding attire — a celebration as wild and bold as the landscape itself.
1. Quiraing
One of the most breathtaking landscapes in Scotland.
The Quiraing is one of the most dramatic and iconic locations for an Isle of Skye wedding or elopement, offering panoramic views, towering cliffs, and otherworldly rock formations that feel like stepping into a film set. Located around 30 minutes from Portree, this incredible landscape sits in the Trotternish Peninsula and is easily reached from either Staffin or Uig via a single-track road. There is a main car park, and from there it’s just a short walk to the ridge you see in the images below — a popular spot for couples to exchange vows or take their wedding portraits.
While the area near the car park is beautiful, I always recommend hiking further in for privacy, quiet, and more immersive views. The Quiraing changes constantly with the weather and light, shifting from soft mist to golden sun to atmospheric cloud within minutes — a dream for fine-art wedding photography. It can be busy in summer, so choosing the right time of day makes a huge difference.
Best season to marry or elope here: Spring or Autumn, ideally at sunrise for soft light and fewer crowds.

2. Fairy Glen
A whole other world of sculpted grassy hills and still pools.
Just above the village of Uig in the north of Skye sits one of the most magical places to say your vows. The Fairy Glen feels like a world of its own — sculpted grassy hills, spiralling ridges, still pools, and hidden caves that create the most enchanting atmosphere for an Isle of Skye wedding or elopement.
Climb to the top of Castle Ewan for sweeping views, or wander the glen’s winding paths to find a quiet, intimate nook for your ceremony. With its whimsical landscape and natural sense of wonder, Fairy Glen is perfect for couples seeking a romantic, secluded place to marry on the Isle of Skye.
Best season to marry or elope here: Summer evenings, or Spring/Autumn early mornings for softer light and fewer visitors..

3. The Old Man of Storr
The most dramatic mountain ridge on the Isle of Skye.
The Old Man of Storr is one of the most iconic and dramatic locations for an Isle of Skye wedding or elopement — a towering pinnacle of rock that can be seen for miles across the island. I can even see the very top from my house! Located on the Trotternish Ridge in the north of Skye (around a 10-minute drive from Portree), the Storr is famous for its otherworldly landscape, breathtaking views, and ever-changing light.
It is also one of the busiest places to elope on Skye — and for good reason. The scenery is absolutely incredible. The hike takes around 45 minutes, following a well-maintained path, and while the climb is moderate, the payoff is extraordinary. Just be aware that Skye’s weather can shift in seconds; sudden mist, wind, or downpours are all part of the atmosphere that make photos here so cinematic.
If you want a truly unforgettable backdrop for your vows or wedding portraits, the Old Man of Storr is hard to beat.
Car Park Location: The Old Man of Storr
Best season to marry or elope here: Autumn or winter ideally, at sunrise or sunset for soft light and fewer crowds.

4. Elgol
A rugged coastline with breathtaking views of the Cuillin mountains.
Elgol is one of the most atmospheric locations for an Isle of Skye wedding or elopement, offering dramatic volcanic beaches, wild seas, and an iconic view of the Cuillin mountain range. Located on Skye’s south coast, the journey itself is beautiful — winding single-track roads, coastal cliffs, and sweeping Highland scenery.
The shoreline at Elgol feels raw and powerful (imagine marrying underneath honeycomb rock), especially at sunset when the mountains glow gold and the waves crash against the rocks. It’s perfect for couples wanting a cinematic, windswept feel to their ceremony or portraits. There are also quieter spots nearby for more private vows if you explore just a little off the main beach.
Car Park Location: Elgol
Best season to marry or elope here: Spring and summer evenings at sunset for rich, warm tones.

5. Loch Coruisk
Inside the Heart of The Cuillins.
Loch Coruisk is one of the most breathtaking and unforgettable locations for an Isle of Skye wedding or elopement — a hidden, glassy loch encircled by jagged mountain peaks that feels completely untouched by time. To reach it, you begin at Elgol Pier and board a boat that carries you past some of the most stunning coastal scenery on the Isle of Skye. The journey itself feels like part of the adventure, and when you arrive, you step into a landscape so quiet and vast it feels like your own secret world.
Boat trips usually run from March to October, though they can be cancelled if the weather turns (and trust me, you don’t want to be out here on a stormy day unless you have strong sea legs!) Misty Isle Boat trips and Bella Jane both offer private crossings — meaning you can arrive at Loch Coruisk when no one else is around, giving you complete privacy for your ceremony.
With its still waters, towering mountains, and incredible sense of solitude, Loch Coruisk is a dream location for couples wanting a wild, intimate elopement in one of Scotland’s most magical landscapes.
Car Park Location: Elgol Pier
Best season to marry or elope here: Summer, at any time of day, when light reflects beautifully off the loch.

6. Sligachan
Where the Black Cuillin meets the western Sea.
Sligachan is one of the most atmospheric locations for an Isle of Skye wedding or elopement, sitting at the foot of the legendary Black Cuillin mountains. It’s centrally located on the island and incredibly easy to reach, making it perfect for couples wanting dramatic scenery without a long hike.
Since moving to Skye, Sligachan has become one of my favourite places to watch the light shift across the mountains — the landscape here is mysterious, rugged, boggy in parts, and unbelievably beautiful. Whether you choose the old stone bridge, the riverbank, or one of the quiet paths leading toward the Cuillin, Sligachan offers a moody, cinematic backdrop for intimate vows or wedding portraits.
Car Park Location: Sligachan Hotel
Best season to marry or elope here: Autumn or winter, especially close to sunset when the Cuillin glow with soft, warm light.

7. Brother’s Point (Rubha nam Brathairean)
A quiet coastal gem with cliffs, sea stacks, and total seclusion.
Brother’s Point is one of Skye’s hidden treasures — a peaceful coastal headland perfect for couples seeking privacy and connection to nature. With sweeping cliffs, rocky shorelines, and beautiful sea views, it offers a soft and romantic backdrop for an Isle of Skye elopement away from the crowds.
It’s a short, scenic walk from the car park and ideal for couples who want a natural, quiet ceremony surrounded by the sound of waves and seabirds.
Best season to marry or elope here: Spring or early summer for clear (less boggy) paths and gentle weather.

8. Eilean Donan Castle
A world-famous castle and one of Scotland’s most romantic wedding locations.
Although not technically on the Isle of Skye, Eilean Donan Castle is considered part of the Skye wedding region and is one of the most iconic places in Scotland to get married. With its stone walls, tidal island setting, and mountain backdrop, it’s an unforgettable location for an Isle of Skye wedding steeped in history and Highland romance.
Couples can marry inside the castle or on the grounds, and the views are spectacular in every season. It’s ideal for intimate weddings, elopements, and portrait sessions before or after your ceremony.
Best season to marry here: Year-round — the castle is stunning in sun, mist, or rain.

9. Duntulm Castle
Clifftop ruins with sweeping ocean views and ancient Highland atmosphere.
Perched on the northern tip of the Trotternish Peninsula, Duntulm Castle is one of the most dramatic historic locations for an Isle of Skye wedding or elopement. Once a stronghold of Clan MacDonald, the ruins sit high above the sea, offering panoramic views of the coastline, the Outer Hebrides on clear days, and the wild, ever-shifting skies that make Skye so magical.
The surrounding cliffs and raw, open landscape create an atmosphere that feels both ancient and intimate. Perfect for couples drawn to history, solitude, and cinematic Scottish scenery.
Best season to marry or elope here: Spring and Autumn, close to sunset, when the light is soft and the cliffside winds are calmer.

10. More Isle of Skye Wedding Location Ideas
Beyond the well-known spots, the Isle of Skye is filled with hidden corners of beauty. A few more popular options include Coral Beach, Neist Point, the Fairy Pools, Dunscaith Castle, and Talisker Bay — each offering its own distinct atmosphere, from white sands and turquoise water to dramatic ruins and moody coastal cliffs.
Living near Portree means I’m always exploring and discovering new places. Over the years I’ve built a private directory of secret, unspoilt wedding locations that I share only with my couples once they book — not only to preserve their intimacy, but to protect the fragile landscapes I’m lucky enough to call home.

How to Get Legally Married on the Isle of Skye
One of the reasons so many couples choose Scotland for their elopement is how simple it is to marry legally here — especially compared to many other countries. Scotland allows legal weddings almost anywhere, whether that’s a mountainside, a loch, a cliff edge, or a cosy cottage. You’re free to choose a location that feels meaningful to you.
Here’s what you need to know about the legal requirements for getting married on the Isle of Skye.

1. Submit Your Marriage Notice Forms (M10 Forms)
Every couple must complete an M10 form for the Highland Council registrar.
These can be submitted:
- no earlier than 3 months before the wedding
- no later than 29 days before the ceremony
It’s best to submit your forms as early as possible.
You’ll need to send:
- M10 forms (one per person)
- birth certificates
- passports
- proof of address
- divorce or death certificates (if applicable)
- the £90 fee
- your chosen ceremony location on Skye
- Your witness details
For getting married on Skye, you will need to send your documents to the Portree & Raasay Office. It is best to give them a call before to check you have the right documents.
If you are not from the UK, you will also need to apply for a marriage visa from your home country
You will need two witnesses for your marriage ceremony. If you want to do it completely alone, I’m always happy to be a witness to any ceremony I capture. Witnesses are included in my All-Inclusive Elopement Packages.

2. Choose Your Celebrant
You can be legally married in Scotland by:
- a humanist celebrant
- a religious or belief celebrant
- a registrar
Most eloping couples choose a humanist celebrant because:
- ceremonies can take place outdoors
- you can personalise your ceremony completely
- handfasting, personal vows and symbolic rituals are allowed
- dates and times are flexible
I will remember my own humanist wedding ceremony forever!
I’ve witnessed the most amazing humanist ceremonies here on Skye. I share a list of trusted celebrants with all my couples once they book but here are some of my favourites.
Humanist Celebrants for your Isle of Skye Wedding or Elopement
- Rona – The lovely Rona is born and raised on Skye and we have worked together for many years! She is now one of my best friends and such a joy! Full of knowledge about the island, going above and beyond for all of the couples she marries!

2. Francesca – The wonderful Francesca is also based on South Skye and is the loveliest and calming person to have for your elopement ceremony. I’ve seen her brave the brutal storms that Skye delivers without faltering on her ceremony!

3. Pick Your Exact Ceremony Location
You must provide your celebrant and the registrar office with the exact place where your ceremony will take place (e.g. “The Quiraing – main ridge plateau” or “Elgol – lower beach”).
This can be updated later if needed — as a local photographer, I help clients choose locations that work with:
- weather
- privacy
- season
- light
- accessibility
And we always have plenty of backup locations!
4. Collect Your Marriage Schedule in Portree
You must collect your Marriage Schedule in person from the Portree Registrar Office in the days leading up to your elopement.
This is the document you sign during the ceremony.
You cannot legally marry without it.
After the ceremony, the signed schedule must be returned to the registrar within 3 days.
A Note on Symbolic Wedding Ceremonies
If the legal paperwork feels overwhelming or you’re travelling internationally, you can complete the legal marriage at home and have a symbolic ceremony on Skye instead. Symbolic ceremonies look and feel exactly the same, but with no paperwork requirements.

Make Your Isle of Skye Wedding or Elopement Personal
Your Isle of Skye wedding or elopement is a chance to create a celebration that feels completely your own — intimate, meaningful, and shaped by experiences that speak to who you are as a couple. Here are a few of the most beautiful and personal touches you can include.
1. Handfasting Ceremony

A beautiful & personal ritual to add to your ceremony
Handfasting is one of Scotland’s oldest wedding traditions and a timeless way to add meaning to your Isle of Skye wedding or elopement ceremony. During the ritual, your hands are gently bound with ribbon or woven cords, symbolising unity and the joining of two lives. It’s a beautiful moment to include — both emotionally and visually — especially against the dramatic backdrop of Skye’s mountains, lochs, and moorland. Whether you choose colours that hold personal significance or cords handmade by a loved one, handfasting creates a powerful, memorable pause in your ceremony.
2. Write your own Personal Vows

Make your elopement ceremony personal and beautiful
Writing and reading your own vows can feel daunting, but one of the gifts of an Isle of Skye elopement or intimate wedding is the privacy it offers. It’s just the two of you — and the landscape — with only your photographer and celebrant quietly witnessing the moment. This intimacy creates the perfect space to speak honestly and from the heart.
I wrote my own vows on the morning of my wedding, and although they were simple, they captured exactly how I felt in that moment — the truth of the day, unfiltered and real. Imagine reading your vows again ten years from now, on your anniversary, remembering the wind, the light, and the quiet of the Skye landscape around you.
3. Bell Tent Picnics

A beautifully styled bell-tent picnic is one of the most romantic ways to end your Isle of Skye wedding or elopement.
Bell-tent picnics offer a cosy, intimate setting — soft blankets, lanterns, locally sourced food, and time to simply be together. Whether it’s set beside a loch, overlooking the sea, or tucked into a sheltered glen, it becomes a private sanctuary away from the wind and the world.
And now, I offer fully styled elopement picnics as part of your Isle of Skye wedding experience. I work closely with some of the best suppliers on the island to create beautiful, romantic setups in the most magical locations. Imagine sharing champagne and a handcrafted wedding cake while snuggled inside a bell tent, watching the sea and the light shift around you.
